? Activities

Soup kitchens. Hazon Yeshaya soup kitchens serve over 400,000 meals each month in a nationwide network of over 60 distribution points. Beneficiaries included over 10,000 school children whose teachers have identified them to be in need of better nutrition. In 2008, expenditures on soup kitchens, including holiday packages, amounted to $9.9 million.

After-school enrichment program. Provides structured after-school programs including tutorials in math, reading, computer activities and sports. The program serves about 5,000 youngsters a year.

Day care centers. These centers provide day care for underprivileged pre-schoolers whose parents cannot afford tuition. There are 250 children enrolled in the program. In 2008, expenditures on day care centers amounted to about $942,000.

Vocational training for the chronically unemployed Vocational training courses provided for the indigent in hairdressing, wig styling and repair, office management, and bookkeeping. In 2008, expenditures on vocational training amounted to about $591,000; Over 700 students participated.

Free dental clinics. Provides free dental care for the underprivileged. Services are provided by dentists who charge no fee. In 2008, expenditures on free dental clinics amounted to about $204,000; seven dentists served over1200 patients.

Shoe and clothing warehouse. Individuals who are in need may select free clothing and shoes.

Bar and bat mitzvah celebrations Organizes bar and bat mitzvah celebrations for orphans and children from abusive and broken homes. Approximately 600 children participated in 2008.

Abraham Israel is retired from the importing business. He was born in Egypt and left for France as a child to escape persecution. He later migrated to the United States and made aliyah after his retirement.

Development and approval of strategic plans, budgets, financial statements and IRS form 990 are discussed at board meetings monthly and if necessary, twice a month.

Hazon Yeshaya requires that every beneficiary register with the organization and regularly checks with government authorities to assure that only the impoverished receive benefits. Programs are evaluated by professionals in each particular field. Evaluations are made several times a year. Those who regularly assist with evaluations are: Rafi Marachi, a businessman, Joseph Lavaie, a real estate developer, Tziona Amiga, Manager of Employment Placement, Israeli Department of Labor and Luba Negdai, National Supervisor of Vocational Training, Israeli Department of Labor. The board discusses the operation of programs including achievement of target dates and success rates each quarter.

VOLUNTEERS

Six hundred (600) volunteers nationwide assist each day in preparing, distributing, packaging, and serving hot meals for schools, after-school enrichment programs, the elderly, and the home-bound, working in the warehouse, packing and cleaning, and assist in the office.
